“Mooo”vable Fences

By Julia Asper, ( 2-minute read)

Here at Asper Family Farm, we like to “mooo”ve our animals to new spaces. This week, I took some photos as Aaron set up a new paddock for our jersey soon-to-be mama and her red angus pals.

I’m so grateful for Aaron to put together the fencing!

I took one look at the supplies, felt confident that this was a project I could set up….but it soon dawned on me that I want not even going to try to tie in an electrical line—I’m married to an electrician, so let’s leave this project to the professional.

Our children helped—some did better than others bringing tools, picking up trash, filling in holes, and they ended up playing like they’re running a dairy. The little ones still need to work on not losing little pieces, too…

Once we got the fence up, the cows walked in a little shyly, and then proudly took ownership. They chased away the chickens and started mowing down the existing, dead grass (which is hay to them).

Plus, this will be our garden spot in the spring—so we’re getting free fertilizer too from them. Mr. Moo is busy munching away in the picture above, and the chickens are helping pick through everything.

Last, here’s Daisy our jersey. Yes, she looks like she’s getting closer to giving birth to her first calf. Do you think it’s a boy or girl?

We’re hoping she’ll be providing milk for us in the new year. If I were her, I’d be happy for the new space, too.

If you look behind us and the portably chicken coop, that’s where we are gradually moving the cows–all of this used to be cow and later horse pasture—so we’re keeping on the tradition.
