Farmers Markets are such a delightful experience, but a little prep and know-how can make your visit even more enjoyable. The Hartsville Downtown Farmers Market runs on the 2nd Saturday of each month, starting in April, from 9 AM to 1 PM on Cargill Way.
After years of running a Farmers Market booth, I’ve found these 10 tips really help customers feel confident and have fun while shopping:
Farmers Market Tips for a Great Experience
🧊 1. Bring a Cooler Bag
You might find fresh dairy, frozen treats, or meats you’d love to take home. Keep a cooler in your car or bring a cooler bag to prevent anything from spoiling—especially on warm days.
💵 2. Bring Cash
While many vendors now accept cards, small farms often prefer cash to avoid fees. Having it ready keeps the line moving and avoids any awkward moments.
🔢 3. Count Back Your Money
Markets can get hectic. If you’re paying with cash, counting your change helps us running the booth stay on track and ensures accuracy for both of us.
🧥 4. Dress in Layers
Mornings can be chilly and afternoons warm—so layer up! A hat and sunglasses are great for sun protection too.
👩🌾 5. Talk to the Farmers
Don’t be shy—ask about their farm, how they grow their produce, or the best way to cook something. Most love chatting about their work!
⏰ 6. Go Early (or Later for Warm Weather)
Early birds get the best parking and most variety of picks. But if you prefer warmer weather and a slower pace, later in the morning works too.
🤝 7. Follow Market Etiquette
Be respectful at the stands—don’t block others, and wait your turn patiently if a vendor is helping someone else. They see you and will be with you shortly!
⏳ 8. Take Your Time
Wander, explore, and enjoy! No need to rush. Most shoppers are focused on their own lists—go at your own pace–even if you feel obvious wandering around and around aimlessly (like me!).
😊 9. Smile and Say Hello
Even if you’re just browsing, a warm “hi” makes a difference. Markets are about community as much as making money to keep their ventures going.
🕐 10. Shop Before Closing Time
Aim to wrap up your shopping before 1 PM. Vendors need time to pack up and get out of the way for traffic to flow, and selections may dwindle toward the end.
With these tips, you’ll feel more comfortable and have a fun time at the market. See you soon the second Saturday!
