Do you know what I do to get eggs ready to sell at a market?
No?
Well, I’m going to show you with a slideshow of pictures I took last time. Oh, by the way, when I sell eggs straight from the farm I like it better because it’s much easier. I just pick the prettiest, clean eggs and then put them in a carton. That’s it!
So, for the market, I have to wash all these eggs…well let me just show you.
Oh, I don’t have a picture of my license, but I had to first get an egg handlers license from the state. They gave me a list of rules I’m afraid to break. Like, I can’t put “farm fresh eggs” on my carton by law. Yet, corporate farms can at the grocery store and…..
Oops, let me get back to the slideshow and not go on a rant…
Click through the pictures and you can read the story I wrote underneath each to explain. It won’t take too long.
First, I have my kiddos go and collect the eggs.
We have over 100 chickens, and since I don’t want to clean that many eggs everyday…we finally got a roll out nest box, which rolls the eggs from out under the hens. It’s so awesome.
I select the prettiest eggs and put them in a plastic tray in a sink of cleaning water.
I have a big pot I can use to rinse them, and it’s so pretty it makes the job more fun.
Eggs dry on a clean cloth.
Here I am candling the eggs to look for cracks and a small air cell to know they are super fresh. I turn off the lights and hold a flashlight under each one.
Arrggghhh. A crack. (add to my omelet egg saving bowl.) Argh. Another crack. 2 down, Alright, what’s going on with all these cracks?
I then go put on a podcast and sit and stamp labels while the eggs dry. I really need to fix my printer…
I’m not the best at stamping. It’s harder than you realize.
I put the labels on (while listening to the same podcast).
Now, I load ’em in the cartons. I like looking at them. I think they’re so pretty! 🙂
And they’re off to the fridge. I think they’re pretty there too all stacked up. Next step is pick-up from the store owner or delivery to the market in a cooler to where you buy them! Unless you came to the farm, then all I did was put them in the carton (that I labeled while enjoying a moment of finally sitting and listening to a podcast).
